Why We Use Sherwin-Williams Paint Exclusively
Not all paint is created equal, and what goes on your home matters as much as who applies it.

Walk into any big-box store and you'll see dozens of paint brands promising one-coat coverage and lifetime durability. Some of those claims are honest. Most aren't. At Trinity Painting & Renewal, we don't roll the dice on what goes on your walls, cabinets, or exterior. We've used Sherwin-Williams exclusively since day one, and here's why that matters for the finish on your home.
Minnesota's Climate Is Unforgiving
Minnesota's climate doesn't do anyone any favors. Our winters can drop 40 degrees below zero. Our summers push 90 with humidity. Freeze-thaw happens dozens of times each spring and fall, and that kind of cycling destroys inferior paint films from the inside out through expansion, contraction, moisture migration, and UV degradation.
Sherwin-Williams engineers their exterior lines specifically for conditions like ours. Their Duration and Emerald exterior products carry documented flexibility, mildew resistance, and UV protection that holds up in real Minnesota weather, not just a lab somewhere warmer. That distinction matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country.
American-Made Matters to Us
Every gallon of Sherwin-Williams paint we put on your walls is manufactured in the United States, from the pigments and resins to the cans and labels. That aligns with everything Trinity stands for, from the crew on the job to the materials going on your home.
Our Good, Better, Best Product Tiers
We use a three-tier system so you can match the product to the project, and we don't offer anything below these three tiers. Using contractor-grade filler paint on a home you've invested in is a disservice to the property.
Good, SuperPaint for interior work and Latitude for exterior, offers excellent coverage, washability, and durability. It's a solid choice for rental properties, secondary spaces, or projects where budget is the primary driver, and it's backed by a solid manufacturer warranty.
Better, Duration, covers both Duration Home for interiors and Duration for exteriors. It's self-priming on most surfaces with excellent hide and a low-VOC formulation. Exterior Duration carries a lifetime limited warranty and superior flexibility for freeze-thaw cycling, making it the right choice for most owner-occupied Minnesota homes. Sherwin-Williams' own Duration exterior product page details the technology behind it, and independent lab testing from Consumer Reports gives an outside look at how it performs over time.
Best, Emerald and Rain Refresh, are Sherwin-Williams' flagship lines for both interior and exterior work. Emerald Rain Refresh exterioractually gets cleaner when it rains, using a self-cleaning technology, and delivers best-in-class stain resistance, color retention, and mildew protection. It's the finish that photographs like it was sprayed in a factory booth, and it holds up to that standard in person too.
Honest Recommendations, Not Upsells
When you get an estimate from Trinity, we tell you which tier we're recommending and why. If the surface, exposure, and use case call for Duration, we won't upsell you to Emerald. If your south-facing exterior takes brutal afternoon sun, we won't cheap out with SuperPaint. That's an honest recommendation based on what your home actually needs, not what pads our margin.
The Warranty Is Only as Good as the Applicator
Here's what most homeowners don't know: every Sherwin-Williams warranty is void if the paint is applied incorrectly, whether that's the wrong surface prep, the wrong film thickness, or the wrong temperature. That's why product choice and applicator matter equally. At Trinity, we follow the manufacturer's application specifications on every project. If a product calls for two coats at a specific mil thickness over a specific primer, that's exactly what goes on your wall. Anything less sets up a callback nobody wants.
A Note on Paint Fumes and Indoor Air Quality
Low-VOC formulations also matter for indoor air quality, not just durability. Freshly applied paint releases volatile organic compounds as it cures, and the EPA's overview of VOCs and indoor air qualityexplains why ventilation and product choice both play a role in a healthier finished space, especially in rooms that don't get much airflow.
This matters even more in households with young kids, pets, or anyone sensitive to strong fumes, since lower-VOC products cut down on that adjustment period after a room gets painted. It's a small detail on paper, but it's part of the same philosophy that runs through every decision we make on a project: choose the right product for the actual situation, not the one that's easiest to upsell.
The Bottom Line
You can hire a painter who cuts corners on products to lower the bid, or you can hire one who uses American-made Sherwin-Williams products, applies them the way the manufacturer designed them to be applied, and stands behind the work. The product on the shelf only matters as much as the hands applying it, and that's where the two halves of this actually meet.
